The Charter Township of Emmett is seeking a qualified application for appointment to the position of Township Clerk. This appointment will fill a vacancy in the Clerk’s office and will remain in effect until the next regularly scheduled election, in accordance with Michigan Law.
The Township Clerk’s Office has administrative responsibility for Accounting and Elections. The Clerk serves as the official record keeper for the Township and is charged with maintaining records delegated to the Clerk’s Office, including but not limited to agendas, contracts, minutes, ordinances, special assessments, and peddler’s permits.
The Clerk also serves as the Township’s Chief Elections Official and administers all elections, voter registrations, and maintenance of the Qualified Voter File. The Clerk serves as the Chairperson of the Township Election Commission.
In addition, the Clerk’s Office maintains records for all township cemeteries and serves as the community’s Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) Coordinator. All requests for information under the FIOA are directed to the Clerk’s office. Applicable forms and fee schedules are available through the Township.
Township Clerk Statutory duties include, but are not limited to:
- Maintaining Custody of all Township Records
- Maintaining the General Ledger
- Preparing warrants for Township Checks
- Recording and maintaining Township meeting minutes
- Keeping the Township book of oaths
- Issuing notices for special meetings
- Publishing board meeting minutes as required by law
- Maintaining voter registration files and conducting elections
- Keeping the Township ordinance book
- Preparing financial statements
- Delivering tax certificates to the Supervisor and County Clerk by statutory deadlines
- Appointing a Deputy Clerk
- Posting and maintaining a required surety bond
The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong organizational ability, attention to detail, professionalism, and the capacity to manage statutory responsibilities while working collaboratively with Township staff, elected officials, and the public.
Minimum qualifications include:
- Registered elector within the Charter Township of Emmett, Michigan.
- Ability to meet statutory requirements for holding public office.
- Strong communication and administrative skills
- Availability to fulfill election-related responsibilities, including evenings and weekends.
